The plot of
is a young, desperate kid spiraling downward and then
deciding to throw himself off of The Golden Gate
Bridge.
The sad, strange truth is that The Golden Gate Bridge
is the most popular destination for suicide. The
average is officially a few people a month, but many
people are never seen or recorded. Abandoned
vehicles are routinely found in the parking lots. Some
people, 2 out of a hundred, actually survive the jump
(245 feet).
For many years there has been a hot debate in the bay
area about the installation of suicide-prevention
fences along the sides. They were installed last year,
right before we filmed there.
In 2006, Eric Steel made a controversial
documentary with actual jumps. It does catch you off
guard to see people kill themselves. It will make you
cry. It is horrific and tragic. But it is also a brutally
honest and powerful thing. There is no doubt in my
mind that this film would help somebody that was
hurting and maybe even motivate somebody to reach
out to that person. It is actually mainstream Hollywood
film that glorifies or cartoonizes suicide; Steel only
tells the stark truth in a very compassionate manner.
