SANCTUARY #3
Original: 40" by 30" by 1 1/2" acrylic painting on
stretched canvas
A young homeless girl naps in the foreground. In
winter the Venice "crazies" are not diluted out by
the tourists. The crazy, non-crazy ratio can reach
1:1. Winter is the best time to go to Venice beach,
or just about anywhere else in California for that
matter.
ENCORE PERFORMANCE
Original: 40" by 30" by 1 1/2" acrylic painting on
stretched canvas
After dusk in winter at the world famous
sidewalk cafe.
MOONLESS
Original: 40" by 30" by 1 1/2" acrylic painting
If you go to the end of Pier One and then look
south under the bridge, this is the view.
There is a steady stream of people that sit at
the end of the pier alone. Even from such a
great distance, it is easy to get a sense of
someone's despair.
HEELS CLICKING PAST ME

An attractive women walks past me, heading
south on Powell.

FARRELL STREET
Original: 24" BY 20" BY 1 1/2" ACRYLIC PAINTING
This homeless guitarist was jamming on a
deserted corner early in the morning with a
clean, pressed shirt and no tip jar - playing
simply for the love of music. This guy was
fantastic. He is proof that we can not lump all
homeless people into one pot. The people who
live outside are just as diverse as the people
who live inside.
THE JUMP SCENE
Original: 40 by 30 by 1 1/2 acrylic painting
The policemen that patrol the bridge for
jumpers look for people alone with slumped
posture and their eyes hidden. These
people are easy to spot, on or off a bridge.
But many times we let them pass right by
without so much as a kind word. One kid
that jumped not so many years ago and
survived said that he had been crying for
hours before he jumped and the only
person that approached him was a tourist
that wanted him to take a picture for her.
He jumped right afterwards.

SAD CARMEN

A runaway poses outside of Zingo's Cafe
before walking north onto highway 99.
Eating at Zingo's Cafe is the closest I have
ever gotten to being in a Steinbeck novel.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
"THE TRUTH CAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE AND EVEN PAINFUL, BUT THERE
IS ALWAYS BEAUTY INSIDE THE TRUTH and the truth is a good
photograph. ON THE OTHER HAND, LIES, HOWEVER PLEASANT THEY
MAY BE, ARE ALWAYS UGLY and make for poor art. I AM
THANKFUL WHEN I CAN SEE THE TRUTH (AND THE BEAUTY) IN PEOPLE
AND PLACES."
